Own Your Office

The last couple of years has shown me how chaotic life can become when I do not have control over various aspects of my day-to-day life. When Covid-19 hit, I was terrified. We were almost all stuck at home, not seeing friends, family, or co-workers. I mean, not all bad, but sometimes it was heartbreaking and scary.

Mother Nature can often take control of our normal routines. This summer it was too much smoke and we needed to stay indoors. Occasionally we get enough snow to slow us way down. All of these things can trap us at home.

But our home can also house an office!

In my home office, I have a desk, file cabinets, desk organization gadgets, and a door to close if off from Mags, my Craigslist terrier. I’m very grateful to have it. During the home quarantine, I was still able to ‘get away’ from home by going into my home office.

I think a lot of people did the same thing. We created an escape inside our refuge.

This sense of security and well-being becomes solid when you own your home office.  If you rent your home, you are susceptible to being asked to vacate without explanation. When you own your home you live under your own set of rules. Your fixed mortgage rate won’t change. A landlord can’t raise the rent annually. There are tax write-offs attached to having a home office. Computers, office supplies, and the square footage of the space all become with tax breaks.

When Mother Nature showers us with more snow than we can travel through, we can stay home and still get some work done.  Of course, this doesn’t work for all professions. But if you are stuck at home, having a home office gives you the capability to make money to survive when catastrophe strikes.
