Home Safety Tips for Northern Nevada’s 2023 New Year’s Storm

Last weekend’s storm was beautiful to watch but has wreaked havoc on our city. In my neighborhood, one side of the street is without electricity and the other side, my side is up and running normally. Here is what I’ve done and seen in the aftermath.

If your power is out:

  • Turn on your taps! Running water helps prevent frozen pipes. Also open cabinet doors to sinks. This will help prevent freezing as well.

  • Reach out to your neighbors. Although my power is on, all of my friends across the street are without heat and power. They have come over to make coffee and charge up electronics. I put a chair, two extension cords, and a stool on which to place things in my front yard. Last night I noticed two rechargeable lanterns on the stool. At least they will be able to see a little in the dark.

  • Knock on doors. If you don’t see any movement from a neighbor’s home, check in on them. After the police showed up on NYE, we found out a couple who need oxygen to live, was in tough shape. My wonderful friend pulled his truck in front of their house and started up his generator. They now have heat, oxygen, and some light. Shout out to Jacob Stafford for keeping them warm!

  • If you need to warm up there are warming stations available for Reno/Sparks. Washoe County Regional Animal Services can help with pets.

  • The Row and The Peppermill are offering discounts to those without power.

Happy New Year everyone! Stay safe.
