Camping; the easy getaway

There are so many things I love about living in Northern Nevada. One of my top reasons is the ability to effortlessly escape into the wilderness.

Last Friday afternoon,  we packed up a tent and the dog and headed off to the Davis Creek Campground. It’s right off of I 80 next to Bower’s Mansion.  So close to home but in the forest. There are terrific trails to hike, both long and steep or short and easy.  The short hike is under 2 miles. For Mags it was more like 5. She’s chasing squirrels the whole time.

The campsites are far enough apart that it doesn’t feel crowded. We chose a site on the outside of the circle so that we had no neighbors behind us. Just a gulley for Mags to run about.

On Saturday we popped over to Washoe Lake State Park . It was more full of water than I have ever seen. There were jet skis and ski boats everywhere. The water was clear and the skies were dotted with clouds. Perfect napping time. We put a blanket out on the lush lawn and looked up at the trees and the clouds. Tony fell asleep in minutes and I watched Mags play in the water. It was a mini getaway from our little getaway.

On the way back to camp we drove around the west side of Washoe Lake and stopped for ice cream bars at a little mini-mart.

By the time we packed up Sunday, I was ready to go home and have a shower but I also felt rejuvenated. It took 25 minutes to get back to my house in Old North West. So close but a world away for 48 hours.

Davis Creek takes reservations and then it’s first come first served, so hop on the website to ensure you have a spot. Washoe Lake State Park is first come first served but will be transitioning to reservations soon.

Summer is just beginning so go out and explore our great basin. And remember, the best part of any day is going home.
