Hidden Gem

Pink blossoms with green leaves against blue sky

Northern Nevada has changed a lot over the decades. When I was growing up here in the 70s and 80s, the outsider's perception of us was a town of gambling, brothels, and not much more.

Reno is so much more than that and I’m so glad the old reputation has faded away.

There are so many activities beyond the casinos to enjoy in our area. Artown is celebrated every July.

“Widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive arts festivals in the entire country by the National Endowment of the Arts, Artown continues to dazzle the community with a month-long celebration of arts and culture that offers nearly 500 events, more than 100 workshops, and over 30 performances. “

I try to attend as many Artown events as possible. It is a highlight of my summer.

We have an ever-expanding cultural scene also.

Pink arch shape with large rat face with Restless Artists' Theater written above

Recently, I was introduced to a hidden gem. Last Sunday I was invited to see a play. It was at RAT Restless Artists Theater in Sparks.  It was cold out and we arrived early. They allowed us to hang out inside before the production of A Feminine Ending, by Sara Treem.

The walls of the lobby are covered in all kinds of art and posters and props from previous productions. A gentleman named Doug, who is also an actor (and more), was generous with quips and comments after every question I asked.

The play itself was wonderful. The production consisted of 5 actors total and the audience was less than triple that. I think this brutal winter kept audience members home. But what a terrific show. Amanda Blue played the lead and she was great. Everyone was in fact.

Because of the small turnout, I was able to speak with all the players after the show. I asked them all…is it harder to act in front of two hundred or a dozen people? They all agreed a dozen can be tough because it is so very intimate. And it was. I found it to be so entertaining and energizing. Very different from going to a movie. Better.

I encourage you to seek out the small live theater productions we have in the area. It was so much fun and I will be back for sure.
