South Suburban Reno: Family-Friendly, Luxurious & Adventure-Ready

When I arrived in Reno as a toddler, South Reno ended at Magic Carpet Mini Golf. There was nothing but cows and sage past that. This area has grown exponentially since then and has become a very coveted place to live. South Suburban Reno has many attractive attributes. If you are raising children, there are some excellent schools. I did some internet and some anecdotal research and found many schools with great reviews. I do not list every school in the South Suburban Reno area.

For elementary schools, there is Elizabeth Lenz, Brown Elementary, Hunsberger, Coral Academy, and Mountain View Montessori. For middle schools, we have Marce Herz Middle and Pine Middle School. The high schools include Galena, and Bishop Manogue, a private Catholic School. The high schools have a graduation rate of 93%. And you can check out the South Valley Library. It’s a beautiful and welcoming facility.

Arrowcreek, Saddlehorn, and Copper View all rank in the top 10 neighborhoods to live in in northern Nevada. The crime rate is 21% lower than the US average.

Now for the shopping! Oh, the shopping at the Summit Mall is the most fabulous in the area, in my opinion. At the Summit, you can find the single Apple Store in Northern Nevada, as well as Ann Taylor’s Loft, and Dillards which still has incredible customer service. There are several yummy restaurants, including BJ’s Bar & Grill, Skipolinis, Land & Ocean, Miguels, and more. There is also a movie theater and nail salons. Head up there in December and get the holiday vibe from the music playing and the fireplaces radiating.

There is no better place to plant roots for the adventurer. Just up the Mt. Rose Highway from the Summit Mall is Whites Creek. It is my favorite place to be in Reno. I hike here as often as possible. I take Maggie with me and take photos and meditate next to the creek. The aspen trees rustle and make that unmistakable shimmery sound as the breeze blows through them.

For more adrenaline-inducing excitement, Mt. Rose Ski Resort is a 15-minute drive up the hill. I’ve been skiing here forever. It’s beautiful even if you don’t ski. Go up and soak up the clean air and have a hot chocolate.

Below the Summit Mall, you have Reno Ice , our local ice rink. They have a full schedule online and many activities to offer. And of course, you will be very close to Nevada’s gem, Lake Tahoe. I really can’t say enough about the area. Homes tend to keep their value here. It is more expensive to buy in South Suburban Reno but it comes with so many perk.
