Old Southwest Reno: Where Generations Thrive - Reno High & Family Charm
Old Southwest Reno is a highly desirable area for home buyers. Situated near the Truckee River and Reno High School, often you’ll find generations of families living in this neighborhood who would never entertain the idea of moving away.
I grew up in old SW Reno. I went to Jessie Beck, Swope Middle, and then Reno High School. It was the late 70s into the 80s and we were free-range children back then. So, I got to know my neighborhood because I was out running amok a lot.
Not far from Reno High is Newlands Circle. The homes in this area are beautiful. Some look like castles. The home prices here are not for the faint of heart. Be sure to take an evening drive through here this fall/winter. Many decorate for the holidays, both scary and merry.
Expanding out from Newlands we stay in the Reno High district but into more attainable home prices. These are 3-5 bedroom homes mostly built from the 1930s to 1970.
And expanding even farther west, we get into Caughlin Ranch. The homes in Caughlin Ranch are newer and come with beautiful common area landscaping, clubhouses, a pool, and of course HOAs. But every view is gorgeous.
One thing that really draws people to Old SW Reno is Reno High School. It is a wonderfully rated institution. 95% of the enrolled students graduate (NCES, NV Dept. of Edu.)
RHS has a nationally ranked program for Speech & Debate. They offer We the People, a constitutional education program that promotes civic competence and responsibility. The school also has a wonderful athletics program. I remember hearing the football game fans cheering all the way from my childhood home when I was young. This is a great area to grow up.
One of my past clients sold their beautiful custom home in South Reno to enroll their kids in Reno High School. The house we purchased for them is still gorgeous but going to RHS was important enough to pack up and replant roots. It’s a terrific school.
There is so much more to this area. A lot of hiking and nature to behold. There is Hunter Creek for a 6+ mile hike. Bring water. And there is Dorostkar Park for a much easier nature trail that takes you by the Truckee River. On the way to the hiking, you’ll drive through some of these beautiful neighborhoods. If you think you’d like to see these views every day, call me. We can go walk through some listings and see if we can’t help you start new roots of your own.
Old Southwest Reno offers a unique blend of history, family atmosphere, and access to nature. From the highly-rated Reno High School to stunning neighborhoods like Newlands Circle and Caughlin Ranch, this vibrant area caters to a variety of lifestyles.
